RE: Alaska Caravans and HAPPY campers?

I had a freind who did like doing the caravan thing. She was new at RVing and wanted the security of the group. Her big complaint was that they wanted to drive at 75 mph in 55 mph zones, and things like that. She was criticized because she would not try to drive that fast. She did say that when the roads were bad they were told to slow down.
She also liked not having to worry about reservations. And they did have nice people in her group that she traveled with later. She learned a lot from the other motor home owners.
She prefers not to travel with caravans, but did so when she went to Baja and another to Canada. The places that they didn't get to see, she will do later. She now feels more comfortable on her own.

RE: Telephone Service

We have the Verizon N America plan. We do not pay roaming in Canada. We have service almost everywhere in AK that cell service is available. I also got a USB internet devise and found that it doesn't work as well as the air card I had last year (new computer).
And don't use the air card, etc in Canada. Very expensive! This happened to me last year. The sales person AND CS person I spoke with about the service told me it was OK in Canada. NOT!
I don't like Verizon customer service, and they are getting as bad as the old Cellular One with the billing. But from what I learned from other RVers they have the most comprehensive service in AK for people with service in the lower 48.

RE: Cell Service

I meant to add to my last post....
We like it here so much that we decided to stay the winter. This should be interesting. We found a work camp position with Alaska State Parks in Cooper Landing. We have a little cabin and we are the caretakers. My Verizon works when many others do not here at the SRA.

RE: Cell Service

We have the Verizon NA plan also. Where there was any cell service available, we had service. Our Verizon air card did not work well. I had to sit down with Verizon and do some tweaking and I could get service, but it was like dial-up. I pretty much gave up on it and went to libraries and we joined the Senior Center in Ninilchik where we got wifi (which is very available if you ask around).
We finally settled into the cabin at Cooper Landing and I arranged for internet service. One day while waiting for the tech, I said, "Oh heck, why don't I just try." It worked beautifly.
Others in our group had ATT and the other one and they had the same problem depending where they were.

RE: Camping with a dog . . . is it hard to do

I think it depends on the dog. I had a husky that would not travel well. Obedient when convenient, quiet, except at night when she had to howl now and then. VERY energetic.
We now travel with out Lab, Moli. She is gentle, well trained (not by us), obedient, and spoiled. We have a class A with bunks so she has her own bunk. Most people really like her, including a campground owner who was not quite happy to have us wiht a dog, but did allow it.
We were host at a campground this summer and she made friends with mosto people she met, and most other dogs.
Moli was a stray, and pretty sick when we got her. We took her to a vet who determined that she was an "assist" dog at some point. When we get back to NY (if we do) she is in line to be a "visitation dog" in nursing homes, etc.
We have not had any unpleasant experiences while having her along. We are careful to keep her on a leash, and to clean up after her. We encourage people to meet her IF they are so inclined, but keep her from approaching strangers who seem reluctant to meet her.

JCGibson,
Won't you miss it up here? WE are in Anchorage tonight. I like the town. We are looking into selling our home in NY and getting a condo or something here.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

Lanerd,
We have to go to Simmonds RV due to warranty situation with the hitch. We have heard that Karen's is good and we also liked A & M. I think Simmonds will work out nicely because they have been so very accommodating to us for the work.
I am sure people here who travel to AK will appreciate knowing who to turn to for service in the area. We also had good service at Wingfoot Tires in Anchorage. We had to purchase a tire and found it no more expensive than in Albany, NY. In fact the tire itself was less expensive, the service just about the same.
Things are more expensive here, but since we were hosts at a campground, we had little milage on the MH, and the car gets >30 mpg, so we didn't feel too bad there. In mid summer, if we shopped carefully (and accepted kind gifts of fish) we didn't do too badly for food. WE did dine out a lot, but found the senior center for a HUGE, very good lunch at $6/meal (we joined). Then ate snacks and salad, etc later in the day.
We find that we feel Alaska is another "home" for us now. We love it here and may decide to stay. We will travel south like many who do live here and come back in the summer.
If you get up here, look us up at the boat launch in Cooper Landing. WE will be staying in the host cabin for the winter and hopefully the summer too.

RE: "Who's Going to Alaska in 2009?"

Last year we met relatives and did caravan for a while. It was fun to visit with my BIL and SIL and we had some "security" while doing the trip. We went different ways after a couple weeks and all were happy to do our own thing.
I do advise doing most of the trip solo. You might find a place you want to "hang in" for a while. You can take your time or move through a place quickly depending on what you want to do. YOu will find you meet lots of people during the trip, and most RVers are friendly and helpful to each other.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

Nascarcruzin,
Why not have a rally IN Alaska?
Everyone, fall is lovely here. Today we drove from Cooper Landing to Anchorage for some service on the RV. It was a beautiful drive. The the golds, greens and reds were so vivid in contrast to the snow on the tops of the mountains and patch fog. I didn't want the drive to end,but we soon found ourselves in Anchorage. WE are taking some down time in Anchorage for shopping for the upcoming winter at Cooper Landing.
Who is coming back next year?

RE: On The Road To Alaska

Gee, why doesn't anyone else want to stay here? We move into the Cooper Landing position on October 1. We are busy getting prepared, got a 4wd pickup, warm boots and mittens. I still think we will have a better winter here than we would in upstate NY.
Glad for those of you who made it home safely and wish you all a pleasant and safe trip home.
Thanks to you who stopped by to introduce yourselves. It was nice to meet you all.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

Looks like we definitely will be staying! We will be the "caretakers" of the cottage for ASP at Cooper Landing for the winter, and possibly for as long as a year. We will be there starting about Oct. 1.
Stop to say hello of you get down that way.
